Flesh eating ghouls, ghostly aberrations, and other strange characters round out the cast that make-up this tale from the collaborative team of Jason Degroot and Marc Haines.

Panel: Myth
$4.00 + $1.00 postage
Ferret Press
600 Markview Rd.
Columbus, OH 43214
52pp, full, copied, anthology.  See images at www.ferretpress.com/books  Review by Andrés Indaburu

Myth, issued and presented by the Ohio based Panel collective, is an issue that ( despite its title ) dispels myths instead of creating them, and by that I refer to the myth created by all those angst ridden comic writers/artists/whatever, who think low-budget comics should equal low-quality comics, and do nothing but moan, complain and bitch about the comic auteur´s bleak future after having painstakingly created, photocopied and stapled one crappy zine that will never ever sell.

One should only take a look at www.ferretpress.com to realize that creating independent comics is not only all about fun (as Ferret press` motto says), but about quality as well. In Myth we find five different stories, some better drawn than others, but overall a well thought of and well made comic magazine that portrays what every independant comic writer has always wanted to do: a good piece of work that can stand proudly in the bookshelf with the confidence that it will be picked up more than once. I remember my dad telling me time and again that writing is rewriting when I was a teenager that dreamed of becoming the next Stephen King. Not only do I agree completely with this principle, but I also think the same principle can be applied to reading comics or any other kind of book. A good comic is well read when is read more than once, and in order for that to happen, the comic has to be good. And Myth is good and it doesn´t loose its power or appeal no matter how many times is read.

Funny, entertaining, interesting, exciting or touching, each story represents a point of view, a technique, a vision, an idea, and it brings to my mind the memory of magazines such as Metal Hurlant or Creepy without having to depend on big-breasted-giant-gun wielding-hotties or red eyed ooze and muck monsters to hook an audience . Plus, the bonus issue devoted to music in the form of a tiny vinyl is a plus that is always welcome, and it brings the same combination of good art plus imaginative scripts that make of panel one of the most solid and best comic artist collectives I have known so far.

Jerry Smith
3344 Horner Dr.
Morristown, TN 37814
8pp, pocket, copied.  This is Jerry Smith's foray into comic book minimalism and he accomplishes everything a comic's fan could hope for.  He lays out the entire 8-page mini with simple line drawings that capture key characters and solitary events that are significant to the story being told.  Then he gives us a detailed, personal narrative of one weekend in his life.  Jerry lays bare his life on these little crammed pack pages as he complains about getting older, going gray, and gaining weight.  He reminisces with his wife Vicki about how much their lives have changed over the past year.  He complains about and appreciates his children, comments on the sadness of losing a pet, and questions his place in life.  Jerry states up front that for this comic he wanted to say the story was more important than the artwork and that's exactly what he has masterfully done.

Plastic Farm #12
Plastic Farm
$2.95
3856 Shadywood Dr. #3C
Jefferson, MD 21755
32pp, standard, professional, B&W interior.  Well this is it folks, the last issue of part one of Plastic Farm.  This has been a weird and unpredictable story that has stretched over that last few years.  I have to admit at times it was a little hard to follow (the last 11 issues) because the story has taken so many twist, and it's not always in chronological order.  But the journey has been well worth it.  Rafer has spun a yarn unlike anything I've ever read, he's done it consistently, and he's done it with a passion that comes through on every page.  I would really like to see these first 12 issues collected and republished as a graphic novel.  I think Plastic Farm really lends itself to that format.
Anyway, this issue (#12) takes us readers back to the airport for one final story from Chester.  A few things are revealed, more questions are raised, and the story comes to a smashing end.  Rafer picks up the pencil again with this issue, and although I've enjoyed the various guest artists that have graced the pages of past issues, I do prefer Rafer's unique style that defines Plastic Farm in my eyes.
If you've never read an issue of this on-going story, this probably isn't the place to start.  Instead I suggest you start with issue #1 and work your way to this point.  And now would be a great time to do that seeing that this issue marks the end of part one of the overall story.  So if you're new go to the beginning and try the first few issues to get you acclimated.  If you're a returning reader jump right in.  You won't be disappointed, only left wanting more.

Tura and Eva #1
$2.50
Jim Sumii
PO Box 140696
Boise, Idaho 83714-0696
32pp, larger than digest, professional, B&W interior.  Tura and Eva, two of indie comics best bad girls,  get some terrible news - their book has gone on hiatus!  What are a couple of independent comic characters to do?  How about beat the crap out of two mainstream super heroes and assume their roles!  Things look good until Tura and Eva discover the one big drawback of being a super hero - super villains.  Also in this issue we get to learn the secret origin of Ape-A-Tang, a brainless, brawny brute bent on terrorizing the good citizens of Silver City!
Every comic that comes out of that weird Fecus place in Idaho is a real treat and this one is no exception.  The secret ingredient is the guy that creates these things, Jim Sumii.  Jim is an exceptional artists whose talents make each of his comics a visual delight.  He's a pretty darn good writer too.  In this comic Jim creates a world of fantastic characters living in a somewhat normal setting.  He then manages to give each character their own personality and really brings them to life with realistic dialogue.  Solid storytelling and great art make this a comic worth finding.

The Same Antique Routine

Insect Ash: Comics and Stories
PO Box 30
Hilltown, PA 18927
24pp, pocket, copied.  This simply illustrated, hand-lettered little comic tells the tale of two creatures in the wilderness; one a small insect with an inquisitive mind and the other a large rock-like creature of wisdom.  The two engage in a philosophical discussion about coexistence that culminates in a very corporeal experience.  As stated, the artwork is simple, but by no means is that to be interpreted as unskilled.  The sparse detail and minimal backgrounds are drawn with an obvious understanding of both craft of storytelling and illustration.

Pipe Dream Comics

PO Box 432
Sag Habor, NY 11963
252pp, digest, professional, set of 3.
ADULTS ONLY...really, these comics are going to make ya feel dirty.  These three comics tell the story of an American pastor and his family.  Some might say a dysfunctional family.  It seems their lives start to spiral in bizarre directions after a visit to McBurger where the daughter gets an abortion along with her cheeseburgers and fries.  Or maybe things started getting weird before that at the dad's church when two of the congregation demonstrated sanctified sex.  Or could it have been the masturbation on the pulpit even earlier?  Whatever the case, this family has a lot of sexual energy - and they like to share it with each other.  Incest, sacrilege, and anti-establishment are the themes that run through all three of these comics.  Pastor Don dies, but comes back as a licensed messiah; mom screws just about everybody to include her kids, daughter Veronica gives her heart to save the life of another and still manages to take part in a foursome while in the hospital; and  grownkidman (a forty-year-old child) pisses on a synagogue before having sex with his mother and sister.  Yeah, this isn't you average funny book family.  But there is more to this story than sex. A message about free thinking and commentary on the world we live in today is delivered through these strange characters and unusual situations.  And the art ain't bad either.

Jack and Lucky #3
$2.00
Anthony Hon
245 2nd Ave. #2
San Francisco, CA 94118
20pp, standard, copied.  Okay comics fans in case you've forgotten, or just haven't been turned on to this comic yet, Jack and Lucky is about a single guy that can't seem to find a girl until he happens upon Luna.  Luna's a mysterious, dangerous type of girl that seems to possess all the assets needed to rock Jack's world.  Then there's Lucky.  Lucky is Jack's cat, his six foot, 250-pound cat (I'm estimating the size, let's just say that's one big pussy).  So, you got the idea.  Well, in this issue Jack finally gets Luna where he wants her, in his apartment.  While Jack prepares to enjoy Luna's wild side, Lucky has to contend with a pesky little dog that packs a big bite.
In addition to the Jack and Lucky story this comic also features a biographical piece titled "Drown."  In this personal history Anthony examines his childhood and the role his parents played in making him the socially inept man he is today.  It's probably wrong to say I actually enjoyed reading about Anthony's childhood suffering, but it is an entertaining story (sorry Anthony).  And although I really like the Jack and Lucky storyline and wait with anticipation to see how events will unfold, I think the more personal story was the better story of the two.
Maybe it's just because it is a personal story and that provides some insight into the artist, who knows.  In any case both stories are worth reading and Anthony's art is among some of the most polished I've ever seen in an indie comic.

Celso #4
$2.50
Celso
PO Box 614
Portland, OR 97207
40pp, digest, copied, B&W interior.  The first part of this comic starts off as a silent comic of sorts.  The comic itself  doesn't contain any dialogue in the opening pages, it instead relies on that reader to access a website and listen to music created for the comic.  The comic's creator even includes a time stamp on each page to help the reader stay in synch with the music.  Later in the issue a straight narrative about a bicycle transitions into a more traditional comic of words and pictures.  Then near the end an unexpected essay about Carl Jung and comic books fill a few pages.  The essay appears to be something that was written prior to the comic, maybe as an assignment for a class, and added to fill space.  That's not to say the essay is bad, I actually like Jung (my wife majored in Psychology in college and we have a bookshelf full of  Jung), it's just that it didn't seem to fit.
The artwork in the comic is great.  Full of detail and very effective use of motion lines to create the illusion of movement.  Love the leaping tigers.
As an artist I'm always studying the style of other artists and trying to dissect what it is that makes something appealing.  I can't quite put my finger on it, but there is something captivating about the images in this comic.  Maybe it's the heavy solid black stripes that wrap around the tigers, or maybe it's delicate, almost fragile lines that make-up the train and track that traverse the tiger's grassland.  Whatever it is it works well.

Stories 'N Grooves
£5.00 UK / $9.00 US
Urban Spook
305 a Brockley Road
London SE4 2QZ
UK
32pp, pocket, copied, mixed media audio comic.  When I opened up this package from England, I knew I was in for a treat.  First off, check out the case this comic comes in.  A cardboard wraparound securely bound with a length of string.  Just seeing the craftsmanship put into the packaging of this comic told me there was much more to this than just some lines on paper.  When I unwrapped everything I was holding not only a comic, but also a CD.  The CD consists of the four stories contained in the comic, but on the CD they are accompanied by music and narration.

The stories are about Monk, the creator of this multimedia comic, and some of the musicians he has played with.  Monk narrates some of the comics on the CD, and as he relates the story to the listener, pages from the comic are displayed on the monitor in a series of slideshows.  The images linger for a few seconds on the screen sometimes by themselves, at other times along with the text that Monk recites.

Throughout the entire four stories music plays in the background setting an atmosphere that perfectly matches the somewhat crude drawings and raspy voice of the artist.  The entire feel of this multimedia comic is akin to hanging out in a smoky bar listening to some smooth jazz, at a comforting distance from anything trendy.

Monk has really created something original here.  Some folks that need to have polished comics, or formula based stories probably won't get the same thing out of this that I did, but for all you others out there, you're going to dig it!

And check out Monk's website for some of his other multimedia comics (Warning: contains Adult material).

MATURE CONTENT (Depictions of acts of suicide).  This is a neat little short comic that illustrates several different ways a person can kill themselves.  Some are expected (gun to the head), while others are more creative (walking off a pier with a weight attached to your leg).  Probably some folks will be offended because of the casual approach these comics take to the "illegal" act of suicide, but I say they're neat!

Drunken Cat Comics
6731 Glidden St. Apt #E8

16pp each, standard, professional, Mature Readers.  Okay, let em lay it out for ya.  There's this big monkey (see him up there on the cover on the left) and he's doing some bad things to this 3-foot tall bear named Scar (he's on the cover too).  Anyway, one thing leads to another and Scar is taking a trip to the big house.  There he reunites with old felon friends, but also must deal with a group of skin heads that want to do him in.  This comic is cool!  It has a weird, twisting story full of strange characters that's obviously leading somewhere, but that place is anyone's guess.  What I'm saying is that the story is not predictable.  The artwork is good with plenty of heavy thick lines and occasionally a little over board on the cross hatching, but works well with the story.  The one other thing that stands out with this comic is the writer's unconstrained ability to tell the story.  In so many other small press comics writers avoid certain situations or more often certain words because they may be offensive.  Not here.  The characters dialogue is written as you would expect to hear it given the situations they are in.  Nothing gratuitous, just real exchanges between a monkey, dog, and various people.  Like I said, it's a cool comic!
